: Buy & Sell urged to stop blood sport dog adverts
From The Sunday Times

Buy & Sell urged to stop blood sport dog adverts
John Mooney
Animal welfare groups in the Irish Republic have called on Buy & Sell, a classified listings newspaper, to stop carrying advertisements for dogs used in illegal blood sports.
The newspaper is being used by blood-sports enthusiasts to exchange dogs specially bred for use in badger baiting and dog fighting, according to animal-welfare organisations.
Although the blood sports are organised in secret, the sale of some dogs used in the illegal practices is organised through Buy & Sell.
Some advertisements that offer terriers described as “working strain” are in fact dogs bred to bait badgers, a protected species. The adverts usually include terms that refer to a dog’s working ability, strain or bloodline.
Orla Aungier, a spokeswoman for the Dublin Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Dspca), said the newspaper had promised to stop carrying ads for patterdale terriers, a breed used for baiting badgers, but they were appearing again. “We have told Buy & Sell that we were not happy to see terms like ‘working dogs’ being used to advertise patterdales, as it usually meant the dogs are being sold by people involved in illegal blood sports,” said Aungier.
“As far as the society is concerned, Buy & Sell should not be carrying advertisements for patterdale terriers, or any other dog for that matter. We also believe that some dogs offered for sale come from puppy farms. We would urge people never to buy a dog or puppy from the pages of Buy & Sell.”
Stephen Philpott, the chief executive of the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, described the newspaper as a “meeting point” for blood-sports enthusiasts. He wants legislation to curb such adverts. “Our investigations have shown time after time that criminals involved in organised blood sports, such as badger baiting and even dog fighting, often contact each other through adverts which they place in the Buy & Sell,” he said.
“If it were not for the classified section of that newspaper, these people would have difficulty making contact with networks of other blood sports enthusiasts and sourcing new dogs for their sport.”
Christian Jago-Byrne, a spokesman for Buy & Sell, said it had banned adverts for “working terriers” but some were published accidentally due to the large volume received in recent weeks. “We will be addressing this issue from next week,” he said, pledging the newspaper would do its utmost to address the issues raised by the two animal welfare agencies.

Victory for seals in Europe! Help us keep the pressure on
Canada:
https://secure.hsus.org/01/EU_BanSealTrade_monthly/nwpAzp2SqsCRg?
Dear Bernie,
We just achieved a landmark victory for the seals!
Today, the European Parliament made history when it voted overwhelmingly to ban trade in seal products. This vote means that all three European Union (EU) institutions - the Commission, the Council, and the Parliament - are now in agreement, and seal products will no longer be placed on the market within the EU.
Europe has been a primary market for Canadian seal products, and many believe this ban spells the beginning of the end of the slaughter!
We could not have won this victory without you. Your letters, phone calls, faxes, and emails to MEPs, national governments, and other decision makers showed that Europeans care deeply about the seals, and made it clear that the public expected nothing less than a strong ban.
We know that closing markets saves seals' lives. Just the prospect of an EU ban on seal product trade was enough to drive the prices for seal fur down to just $15 Canadian per skin this year - a decline of 86 percent since 2006. Many sealers chose not to hunt seals this year as a result - and to date, out of a quota of 338,200 seals, just 57,622 have been killed. It is likely that when the seal hunt officially ends on 15 May, a quarter of a million seals will have been spared a horrible death. Now that the EU has banned its trade in seal products, countless more seals will live out their lives in peace from this year forward.
On our trips to the ice, Humane Society International has brought key opinion shapers such as Paul McCartney and Swedish Member of the European Parliament Carl Schlyter. After their trips, neither has wavered in speaking out against the hunt.
Shortly after his trip to the ice, Carl drafted the first version of today's EU ban. Our hunt footage was directly responsible for convincing the rest of the EU to agree to the ban. It gives me enormous satisfaction to know that we haven't just documented the hunt, we have made history.
But even as we celebrate this amazing victory, we must remain vigilant. Because there is every chance the sealing industry will develop new markets.
That is why we will continue maintaining economic pressure on Canada's fishing industry through our boycott of Canadian seafood products. We will continue pressing for a strong law in Canada to stop commercial sealing. And we will continue to lobby other nations to ban seal products.
Please join us as we finally put an end to the cruel slaughter of baby seals. Become a monthly supporter of Humane Society International and help us keep the pressure on Canada:
https://secure.hsus.org/01/EU_BanSealTrade_monthly/nwpAzp2SqsCRg?
We are thrilled by our success in passing this ban today, but there is still more to be done.
We are so close to putting this cruelty in the history books where it belongs - thank you for being a part of this historic campaign to save the seals. I know we can count on you to stay with us as we bring a final end to Canada's commercial seal slaughter.
Celebrating this moment,
Rebecca Aldworth

Subject: AL-MASRY AL-YOUM
TV Report done by Al-Masry Al-Youm on the culling of pigs in Egypt. Contains very graphic video of pigs being slaughtered and badly handled.
Do NOT watch if you are too sensitive to animal suffering, or you can turn your face around during these scenes.
It is so inhuman the way they treat the pigs. There has to be a government response to rectify this behaviour and make it unacceptable and punishable by law.
It gives a bad image to Egypt, contradicts the teachings of Islam, is inhuman and barbaric by all the civilized norms and international laws. Australia stopped for a while exporting live sheep to Egypt because of the way the animals were treated and handled before the slaughter. Export by Australia was restarted again recently. This can also affect tourism in Egypt. The treatment of stray animals such as dogs and cats is also on the list of complaints by foreigners who visit or live in Egypt. All this is causing nothing but damage to Egypt's reputation abroad. It's an offense punishable by law.

Rescue centre accused of link to ‘puppy farm’
A LAMPETER animal rescue centre has been slammed by other groups in the area after it emerged that it has been taking dogs to kennels that were raided by the RSPCA. Ty Agored Animal Sanctuary revealed in a recent newsletter that they had taken border col-lies to the Gypsy-run kennels in Chippenham, Wiltshire, on two occasions since the site was inspected by officers from the Wiltshire Constabulary and RSPCA on 17 October last year. Around 23 dogs were taken from the site at Oak Tree Farm after being checked by a vet, after complaints were received about the conditions in which animals were kept. The local press had reported that animals were being kept in cramped conditions, with others in need of urgent medical treatment. Kathy Clements, spokesperson for Border Collie Rescue UK said: “It was brought to our attention that collies were being taken from Ty Agored Animal Sanctuary in Cribryn to Oak Tree Farm, Kington St Michael, Chippenham, which is a known puppy farm. “The RSPCA and police res-cued about 20 dogs from the farm on 17 October 2007. “It is beyond belief that Ty Agored have an agreement with Lucky Paws Dog Rescue (which runs the site in Wiltshire) to supply them with border collies.” Ty Agored should have “made it their business” to investigate the background of the site, she said. June Hodges, a member of the Ceredigion Animal Rescue and Education charity, added: “I think people who give money to Ty Agored would be horrified to know that dogs are being sent there.” Jenny Warwick, a manager at Ty Agored, said the charity was unaware of the raids. “We definitely weren’t aware of that. We did go down and inspect it and it seemed fine to us,” she said. “We’ve never given her more than five or six at a time and they were all re-homed within a week. I stand by that decision. As far as the animals are con-cerned, we did the right thing.” At the time of the raid, the owner of the site, Sally Griggs, told the local press: “I love every single puppy here and would never let them come to any harm. “They checked over every sin-gle other dog we had and gave them clean bills of health. “The only crime we were guilty of is having a few more animals than we should have, but that is because I can’t bear to see dogs turned away.” An RSPCA spokesperson said that an investigation had been carried out following the sei-zures but that it had decided not to prosecute.
